Toys were made to be played with, so surviving ones in good condition are scarce — and that scarcity drives a strong collector market. Here's what to check.
Main categories
- Tin toys: lithographed tin wind-ups, cars, robots and figures
- Cast iron toys: vehicles, banks, cap guns
- Mechanical and still banks
- Toy trains and accessories
- Die-cast cars and vehicles
- Dolls (see vintage dolls value)
- Teddy bears and soft toys
Look for the maker
Maker marks are usually on the base or underside, sometimes printed into the tin lithography. Country marks ("Germany", "Made in Japan", "Made in Occupied Japan", "Made in USA") help date them. See Made in Occupied Japan.
Condition is everything
- Paint and lithography: bright, unscratched surfaces sell best
- Rust: reduces value, especially on tin
- Working mechanisms: wind-ups and banks that still work are worth more
- Completeness: original keys, drivers, accessories and parts
The original box
Original boxes can add significantly to value, sometimes nearly as much as the toy. Keep boxes even if damaged.
Reproductions
Cast iron banks and toys are widely reproduced. Reproductions often have rough castings, poor fit between parts, and new-looking paint. Tin toys are also reissued. Compare with references.
Restoration
Repainting usually lowers collector value. Leave original paint, even if worn.

Should I repaint an old toy?
No. Repainting usually reduces collector value.
How can I tell a reproduction cast iron toy?
Look for rough castings, poor fit, fresh paint and wrong details compared with originals.
