Vintage Cast Iron Skillet Value: How to Identify Makers
Identify vintage cast iron skillets by maker marks, logos, heat rings, size numbers and pattern numbers, and learn what makes old cast iron valuable.

Vintage cast iron is loved by cooks and collectors alike. Older skillets are often lighter and smoother than many modern ones, and pieces by certain American makers have a strong following.
Look at the bottom
Almost everything you need is on the underside:
- Maker's name or logo: famous historic makers include Griswold, Wagner, and others. Logos changed over time, which helps date pieces.
- Size number: often on the bottom or handle (e.g. "8").
- Pattern number: a catalog number for the design.
- Heat ring: a raised ring near the edge on some older skillets.
- Country of origin: "Made in USA" and similar wording can help date.
Unmarked cast iron
Many quality skillets were sold unmarked (often for department stores). They can still be good pans, though usually worth less than marked examples. Features like heat rings and finish quality help identify them.
Smooth vs. rough surface
Older skillets were often machined smooth inside. Many later pans have a pebbly cast texture. Smooth cooking surfaces are popular with users.
What affects value
- Maker and logo variant (some are much scarcer)
- Size: certain sizes are rarer
- Condition: cracks, warping and heavy pitting reduce value
- Flatness: wobbly pans are worth less
Check for damage
- Cracks: hold to light, tap it and listen for a dull tone
- Warping: set it on a flat surface and check for spin or rock
- Pitting: from rust; light pitting affects value less than deep pitting
Restoring
Rust and old seasoning can be removed and the pan re-seasoned. For collectible pieces, gentle methods are best. Cleaning a skillet for use is fine; it doesn't hurt value the way polishing a coin does.
