Vintage wristwatches have become one of the hottest collectible categories. A dad's old watch in a drawer can be worth very little — or a great deal. These are the factors that decide which.
Brand and model
Certain brands and models drive the market: well-known Swiss makers, classic dive and chronograph models, and pieces with famous associations. But plenty of lesser-known brands made excellent watches that collectors appreciate too.
Reference and serial numbers
Many watches carry reference and serial numbers between the lugs or inside the caseback. These identify the exact model and approximate production date. Don't open a water-resistant case yourself — a watchmaker can do it safely.
Movement
- Mechanical (manual or automatic) watches are generally more collectible than quartz.
- In-house or notable movements add interest.
- Chronographs and complications add value.
Originality is everything
Collectors pay for watches that are as they left the factory:
- Original dial (not refinished/"redialed")
- Original hands and bezel
- Unpolished case with sharp edges
- Correct crown and crystal
A replaced or repainted dial can dramatically reduce value.
Condition and patina
Even, attractive aging of a dial ("patina") can be desirable. Water damage, rust and heavy scratches are not.
Box, papers and history
Original box, warranty papers, receipts and service records add value and help authenticate.
Beware of fakes and "frankenwatches"
Popular watches are faked, and some vintage watches are assembled from mixed parts. Buy and sell valuable pieces with authentication.

Frequently asked questions
Are old watches worth anything?
Many are worth modest sums; collectible brands, models and complications in original condition can be worth much more.
Should I service a vintage watch before selling?
Not necessarily. Some buyers prefer unserviced watches to check originality. Never polish the case.
Does a quartz watch have collector value?
Some early or designer quartz watches are collectible, but mechanical watches usually attract more interest.
